THE LAST POGROM OF THE EMPIRE

14.06.2026

On June 12, 2026, as part of a joint educational project of the Museum and the Hesed-Menachem Charitable Foundation, another online meeting was held dedicated to the tragic events of 120 years ago – the Bialystok Pogrom, which took place on June 14-16, 1906. Three days of violence shook the public of the entire Russian Empire and became known far beyond its borders. In fact, it was the Bialystok pogrom that forced the governments of European countries, as well as the United States, to condemn Russian state anti-Semitism for the first time.

What were the causes of the pogrom and how did this event in a seemingly provincial city in the west of the empire change its image, as well as the stories of prominent representatives of the Jewish community of Bialystok, in particular, the lesson was held by Dr. Yehor Vradii, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”.

You can also watch a video dedicated to the tragedy of the Bialystok Pogrom on the Museum's YouTube channel.
