24.05.2020

“There is not anyone other's pain” - the moral credo and the worldview of Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”. However, all of us - Ukrainians, regardless of ethnic origin and religion, are united not only by the memory of pain and tragedy, but also by the joy of living together, cooperation and mutual respect for the values and traditions of everyone. On this day, Muslims of Ukraine and the whole world celebrate one of the main holidays - Oraza Bayram.

This year, the festival of Oraza Bayram, also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast” or Eid al-Fitr, honored by Muslims of the world, falls on May 24, 2020. It is preceded by a 30-day fast, which begins on the first day of the month of Ramadan. According to Islamic tradition, during the fast it is forbidden to speak obscenity, to lie, to commit deceitful and impious acts, to swear and vilify another. During the day, from dawn till dusk, it is not allowed to drink, eat, or smoke; forbidden fun and entertainment. In addition to the obligatory fivefold prayers, every night Muslims additionally carry out individual or collective prayers - Tarawih. During fasting, Muslims should pay particular attention to good deeds: feed the hungry, invite at least one fasting person to their homes, and share dinner with him in the evening.

This month, the Quran was granted to Muslims, and for fasting, all sins are “burnt”, the doors of hell (Jahannam) are closed and the doors of heaven (Jannah) are opened. Only pregnant women and mothers who feed their children, patients, travelers and the military are exempted from fasting. Fasting ends with the Festival of Breaking the Fast, the first day of the month of Shawwal. On this day, believers greet each other with the words “Eid Mubarak” (“Blessed Holiday!”). Muslims responsibly prepare for the festive day: they clean, prepare holiday dishes, give alms to the poor - money or dry products, visit a cemetery, and put in order the graves of loved ones. During Oraza Bayram, believers dress in the best clothes and go to visit, children deliver all the dishes prepared at home to their neighbors, there is a mutual exchange of holiday dishes. On this holiday it is customary to rejoice and have fun. So Eid Mubarak! Mazal Tov!
