Today marks the Day of Defenders of Ukraine – a day that has taken on new significance for each of us since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. Above all, this day honors those who enable us to preserve our independence and go about our daily lives – raising children, working, studying, and connecting with family and friends. It is another opportunity to thank the defenders who, through their heroism, courage, and selflessness, safeguard the lives of millions of Ukrainians; it is a chance to remember and honor the feats of those who fought for Ukraine’s independence, those who are fighting for it today, and those who, tragically, gave the ultimate sacrifice – their lives – for that cause.
The date was established by a Decree of the President of Ukraine dated October 14, 2014, and was originally named “Day of the Defender of Ukraine.” Starting in 2015, the Day of the Defender of Ukraine was declared a state holiday and an official day off. In 2021, the name was changed to “Day of Defenders of Ukraine.”
In 2023, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine was moved from October 14 to October 1 due to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church adopting the Revised Julian calendar. This holiday coincides with the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos – and not by chance. The Cossacks held the Most Holy Theotokos in high reverence, and the Feast of the Intercession was one of their most significant holidays, earning it the alternative name “Cossack Intercession.” To this day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine uphold these centuries-old military traditions.
Amidst Russian aggression, we have all keenly felt the significance of the heroism displayed by our military. Ukrainian soldiers – true titans and descendants of the Cossacks, in whose veins flows the blood of a free people – demonstrate immense, indomitable strength and valor. Today, they are fighting for the independence and sovereignty of the Ukrainian state in the war against the Russian aggressor. Defending the Motherland has become a cause for all Ukrainians – on the front lines and on the home front, in relatively peaceful regions and in those currently under Russian occupation – making this a truly nationwide holiday.
We extend our greetings to everyone currently in uniform and under arms at the hottest points of the conflict, to those keeping a vigilant watch on the home front, and to those bringing victory closer through their peaceful labor – all standing shoulder to shoulder for Ukraine. We hold firm. We work. We unite. Only in this way will we defeat the enemy! May peace and tranquility come to our land as soon as possible!
Happy holiday to you, dear defenders of the Motherland!
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!
