The Museum of “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, together with the Hesed Menachem Foundation, continues its educational activities within the framework of the Jewish Heritage project. On July 8, another lesson of the educational project was held, conducted by the Museum’s research associate Dilfuza Hlushchenko. This time, the audience of the open lecture got acquainted with the figure of Samuel (Chaim) Granovsky, a native of Katerynoslav (now Dnipro), a talented painter and sculptor who, due to his eccentric image, was called the “Cowboy of Montparnasse” in Paris. His original talent blossomed in the Paris School of Artists, which included Marc Chagall and a whole constellation of bright masters. It was a unique melting pot of talents, where the emotional Amedeo Modigliani, the expressive Chaim Soutine, and the sophisticated Robert Delaunay worked side by side. The participants of the meeting plunged into the amazing world of Samuel Granovsky: from colorful scenes of Parisian life to his bold experiments with form and color. They learned about the influence of the avant-garde circle of Jewish emigrants on the formation of the work of this incredible artist from the banks of the Dnieper. Unfortunately, the tragic fate during the Holocaust cut short the artist's life in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, but his art lived on.
Jewish heritage is multifaceted. Let's learn interesting things together!
