“Jewish Heritage” Project Classes

26.12.2025

Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” together with the “Hesed Menachem” Foundation continues its educational activities within the framework of the “Jewish Heritage” project. On December 26, the last open lecture class in 2025 was held, which was conducted by the Museum's researcher Dilfuza Hlushchenko.

Another year has passed… Humanity takes stock, counts successes and achievements, mourns losses and failures, and, of course, dreams. It is thanks to dreamers who did not limit themselves to the boundaries of existing reality and made extraordinary efforts to realize their cherished dream that the world has gained new achievements. The meeting of the “Jewish Heritage” was dedicated to one of such people, a Polish doctor and linguist of Jewish origin, the ideological inspirer and developer of the international artificial language “Esperanto”, Ludwik Lazar Zamenhof.

According to the largest language catalog Ethnologue, as of 2025, there are 7150–7168 living languages in the world. The language barrier has always led to misunderstanding, disunity, the emergence of prejudices and superstitions, and, as a result, enmity between peoples. Ludwik Zamenhof, known as Doctor Esperanto, called: “Break, break the walls between peoples!” Who else, if not him – a native of multi-ethnic Białystok, knew about language barriers and the superstitions associated with them. From dreams of a common language for all people, he moved on to action and developed an artificial language “Esperanto”, which was supposed to promote peaceful communication and coexistence of different peoples and cultures.

After the lecture, a lively discussion of what was heard continued. The audience of the open lecture expressed their thoughts on the language issue in different countries of the world. Poems about the present were recited in Ukrainian and Yiddish. The meeting ended with warm greetings for the upcoming holidays.

Jewish heritage is multifaceted. Let's learn interesting things together!
