On September 30, a solemn event dedicated to the memory of the victims of the shootings in Kyiv was held in Kyiv – a round table “Babyn Yar: and thousands of ravines of memory throughout Ukraine”. The event was initiated and held by the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience (DSL); in the region it was supported by the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration. The purpose of the event was to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy in Kyiv as one of the most tragic pages in the history of World War II, but, unfortunately, not the only one.
The round table brought together a wide range of invited guests – scientists, museum and archival specialists, public activists and human rights defenders, as well as descendants of the Righteous Among the Nations, who had the opportunity to join online. At the beginning, the guests were welcomed by the Chairman of the DESS V. Yelensky. Then, in accordance with the event program, the work continued in 3 panels for speeches: historical analytics; art and memory; Righteous and witnesses.
The Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” was presented by reports from the Director of the Museum, Dr. Iryna Radchenko, and Deputy Director for Scientific Work, Dr. Yehor Vradii. Thus, Dr. I. Radchenko spoke about the main areas of the Museum’s work, focusing on the presentation of the Dnieper Babyn Yar in the museum space. Dr. Yegor Vradiy’s speech was devoted to the problem of erasing the memory of the Holocaust in the post-war Soviet era.
The event was another manifestation of attention to the topic of the Holocaust, which is especially significant during the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Babyn Yar continues to remain a symbol of national memory, uniting the tragedies of different regions of Ukraine, where mass graves of tens of thousands of innocent victims are located.
