The Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” announces with deep sadness that the famous Israeli historian and public figure Aaron Weiss (1928–2025), who collaborated with our Museum for many years and was a highly professional advisor and friend, has passed away.
Aaron Weiss was born in Boryslav, Lviv Oblast. He was 12 when the Nazi occupation began. Thanks to the help of two women – a Ukrainian and a Polish woman – the Weiss family managed to survive. The horrors of the Holocaust remained an unhealed wound throughout Aaron’s life.
A. Weiss did a lot to preserve the memory of the Holocaust victims, to educate young people in the spirit of mercy and tolerance. The historian was at the origins of the Youth Interreligious Seminar “The Ark”, which has a long tradition of educating young people in the spirit of spiritual opposition to Evil.
A. Weiss was one of the consultants during the creation of the permanent exhibition of the Museum. Its integral part is the installation of the shelter in which the Weiss family hid during the occupation. Also, the story of the life and rescue of a Jewish family in occupied Boryslav is reflected in several documentaries.
We express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Aaron Weiss.
