Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” together with the Charitable Foundation “Hesed Menachem” continues its educational activities within the framework of the project “Jewish Heritage”. On June 24, 2025, another lesson was held, which was conducted by the Museum's researcher Dilfuza Hlushchenko. This time it was dedicated to the beloved author of several generations, one of the most famous German writers of the 20th century, whose novels have been translated into many languages of the world - Erich Maria Remarque.
Remarque's books highlight Jewish themes, expressing his view of Jews against the backdrop of the resistance to Nazism. It is not often that non-Jewish writers have paid so much benevolent attention to the Jewish people in their works. Remarque's bold public position was that most of his books were written at a time when the misanthropic ideas of Nazism were spreading throughout Europe and the world, and it was unknown whether anyone would be able to stop them. You don't choose the time to be born. The lives of Erich Maria Remarque's heroes, like his own, were marked by adversity. A war that breaks destinies, loss of illusions, persecution, emigration, hopelessness... But, despite any trials, people do not lose courage or inner strength, they remain capable of self-sacrifice, true friendship and great love.
Remarque's work and our present. About life and death, war and the thirst for life, despair and hope, loneliness and passion in the works of the outstanding writer – all this was discussed by the participants of the meeting. The audience of the lecture talked about their favorite works, shared impressions of biographical details, remembered the most famous characters.
Jewish heritage is multifaceted. Let's learn interesting things together!
