On May 14, a special film screening dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainians who rescued Jews during World War II was held at the Menorah Cultural and Business Center. The event was organized in cooperation with the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Menorah Art Platform, with the assistance of the United Jewish Community of Ukraine.
The event featured the feature film “Shchedryk” by Olesya Morhunets-Isayenko. The plot of the film takes us to the multinational Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk) during World War II. Ukrainians, Poles and Jews – three families, three destinies, one tragedy. Their children remain orphans after the repressions of the Soviet regime and the occupation by Nazi Germany. The shelter, created by the singing teacher Sofia, becomes a kind of island of hope and warmth for them, where “Shchedryk” sounds – a melody that unites, heals, and saves. However, even after the war, the heroes did not find peace – the Soviet government again destroys everything they had and tries to break the human heart.
Before the screening, the guests were addressed by the Director of the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Dr. Iryna Radchenko, and the Deputy Director of the Museum for Scientific Work, Dr. Yehor Vradii. They reminded the audience of the significant contribution of Ukrainians to saving Jews during World War II and drew attention to the various reasons and motivations of people who were forced to act in such a way in extreme conditions. The relevance of such films that connect the past with the present was emphasized.
The special guest of the event was the leading actress Yana Koroleva. After watching the film, the actress warmly talked to the audience about the peculiarities and difficulties of the filming process.
This event was an important event that once again reminded us of the tragic history of the Holocaust, the hopeful stories of salvation, and the importance of remembrance as an integral part of our future. Thank you to everyone who shared this day with us.!
