THE FILM “SHCHEDRIK” SCREENING on the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainians Who Rescued Jews During World War II

13.05.2025

On May 14, the Menorah Cultural and Business Center will host a special film screening dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainians Who Rescued Jews During World War II. The event is organized in cooperation with the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Menorah Art Platform, with the assistance of the United Jewish Community of Ukraine.

Olesya Morhunets-Isayenko's film “Shchedryk” takes us to the multinational Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk) during World War II. Ukrainians, Poles and Jews – three families, three destinies, one tragedy. Their children remain orphans after the repressions of the Soviet regime and the occupation by Nazi Germany. The shelter, created by the singing teacher Sofia, becomes an island of hope and warmth for them, where “Shchedryk” sounds - a melody that unites, heals, saves. However, even after the war, the heroes did not find peace – the Soviet government again destroys everything they had and tries to break the human heart.

Today, when we are again fighting for the right to be ourselves, “Shchedryk” sounds especially poignant and proud. It contains all the challenges that we are overcoming even now: the threat of destruction, painful loss, attempts to preserve dignity and mutual support. This film is a reminder: cruelty can change form, but humanity always wins. Not through the power of weapons, but through the power of simple actions – to give shelter, to extend a hand, not to turn away.

At the end of the film screening, the event's honored guests, including the lead actress Yana Koroleva, will chat with the audience and talk more about the creation of this important film.

The event starts at 5:30 PM.
