The Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred is a National Day of Remembrance, which is celebrated in Ukraine on February 20 to honor the feat of the participants of the Revolution of Dignity and perpetuate the memory of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred – the fallen Euromaidan activists who were shot by the security forces. It was on this day in 2014 that the most people died during the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine – 48. In total, 107 people died during the Revolution of Dignity, of which 106 were Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred.
The Day of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred is a day of remembrance and mourning, as well as a day of unity and dignity of Ukrainians. On this day, Ukrainians honor the memory of the fallen heroes, and go to the Maidan to show their unity and devotion to the ideals of the Revolution of Dignity.
On this day, a ceremony commemorating the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and participants of the Revolution of Dignity and the annual silent action “Angels of Memory” is taking place on the Alley of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred in Kyiv. It is joined by other cities of Ukraine and the world.
The memory of the feat of the Heavenly Hundred is commemorated under the slogans “Grateful for freedom!” and “We remain worthy of our heroes.”
Freedom is a fundamental characteristic of human existence; it is the possibility of free choice and awareness of one's own responsibility for this choice. The heroes of the Heavenly Hundred made their choice - to choose freedom and dignity, giving their lives for it. They died for Ukraine to develop as a free democratic state.
The war for freedom and independence did not end then on the Maidan. Totalitarian states are attacking democracy. Everything is going on: military invasion, political murders, intimidation, bribery of politicians, information sabotage. Putin and his henchmen want to destroy Ukraine as such along with our democratic values. But the Ukrainian people once again prove to the whole world that they are capable of distinguishing between good and evil and choosing justice.
