Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” together with “Khesed Menachem” continues its educational activities within the framework of the “Jewish Heritage” project. On September 13, the researcher of the Museum Dilfuza Hlushchenko held a meeting with regular and new participants of the open lecture.
On the occasion of the upcoming Rosh Hashanah holiday, a new lesson was devoted to the most common dish among the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, without which it is impossible to imagine a traditional feast. The listeners of the project learned about the history of the origin, prerequisites for the success and popularity of the dish of Ashkenazi cuisine – tsimesh. The participants were particularly interested not only in the variety of this seemingly simple treat, but also in the fact that the word “cymes” itself acquired several meanings, going far beyond culinary boundaries. Moreover, to the answers on the question “Why is cymes always sweet?” and “Why did ordinary carrots become an exquisite Jewish dessert?”, during the class you could also learn about the perpetuation of this dish in literature, folklore and even music.
At the end of the meeting, there was a lively discussion of new information, which turned into mutual greetings with the coming holidays of the month of Tishrei.
Jewish heritage is multifaceted. Let's learn interesting things together!
