THIS DAY – August 24, 1991 – Independence Day of Ukraine

24.08.2022

On August 24, Ukraine celebrates one of the biggest public holidays – Independence Day.

In 1991, a fateful historical event took place – the Act of Independence of Ukraine was proclaimed by the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR with an absolute majority of votes. This Act crowned the millennial aspirations of the people of Ukraine – have its own sovereign state and independently determine their own destiny.

It is known that Ukrainian statehood is already thousands of years old - it is worth noting its earlier stages: Rus, Galicia-Volyn Principality, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Ukrainian Cossack State, Ukrainian state formations of the early 20th century. etc. It is from them that modern Ukraine inherited the state traditions, and freedom and dignity have always been and remain fundamental values for Ukrainians.

The main acquisition of Ukrainians during the years of existence of the state of Ukraine is us, Ukrainians, the people of Ukraine – free people in their own free country.

This year, Independence Day is overshadowed by the full-scale military invasion of Russia, accompanied by mass actions of violence. Ukrainians are dying, our cities are being destroyed, and the souls of the people who remained in the occupied territories are being mutilated. But Ukraine will surely win, it is already winning! We will be free again!

Today, more than ever, we must unite, unite the efforts of all the various political and religious currents, all peoples living in Ukraine, in order to defeat the terrible enemy. And, exactly this day we should celebrate, rejoice that Ukraine is still alive, its glory and will have not yet died!

Happy holiday, dear friends!
