Russian warship, go away!

Unique exhibits were recently donated to Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” – special envelope with postage stamps “Russian warship, go …!”, “Russian warship …that’s it!” and the corresponding postcard.

On February 24, 2022, when russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the cruiser “Moskva” and the patrol ship Vasyl Bykov demanded the surrender of Ukrainian border guards and military personnel on Zmiinyi Island. In the negotiations, the Russian sailors called themselves a “Russian warship” and threatened to launch a “missile-bomb attack” on Zmiinyi. The response of Ukrainian defenders became one of the symbols of Ukrainian resistance in this war.

On March 1, Ukrposhta announced a competition for the creation of a new Ukrainian postage stamp “Russian warship, go...!”. More than 500 sketches were submitted to the competition, from which 20 finalists were chosen, whose works met the philatelic criteria. Voting took place on the official Facebook page of Ukrposhta. In the end, sketch No. 3 (author – Ukrainian artist Borys Groh) became the winner. 1,700 of the 8,000 people who took part in the voting voted for his work.

On April 12, Roman Hrybov, a border guard from Zmiinyi Island, and Ukrposhta General Director Ihor Smilyanskyi held a stamp redemption ceremony at the Kyiv Central Post Office and signed the first special envelopes. It is symbolic that on the night of April 13 to 14, the cruiser “Moskva”, depicted on the stamp, sank after being hit by Ukrainian anti-ship Neptune missiles.
