RESCUERS AND RIGHTEOUS AMONG THE NATIONS

Righteous Among the Nations is a title awarded by the Israeli National Memorial Complex of the Catastrophe and Heroism of the Jewish People “Yad Vashem” to non-Jews who saved Jews during the Holocaust. A special commission headed by the Supreme Judge determines a candidate's suitability for the title according to specific criteria. Turning the corner to the left, you’ll see the list of these criteria on the stand in front of you.

For various reasons, many Ukrainian Rescuers have not yet been awarded this title. Among them is the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Andrei Sheptytsky. He inspired and organized the Jewish rescue system in Galicia during the Nazi occupation. There is an interactive monitor to the left of the stand with testimonies of Jews rescued by Andrei Sheptytsky. To the right of the stand, you can see an installation dedicated to the Metropolitan. In front of you, there are some unique exhibits - books belonging to this outstanding humanist.  The book of hours and the New Testament with his autograph take a special place in the collection.

To the right of the installation, you can find some information about other church figures of various denominations who also took part in the salvation of Jews. Klimentiy Sheptytsky, Oleksiy Glagolev, Omelyan Kovch. For example, Omelyan Kovch was sent to the Maidanek death camp for hiding Jews. He died there after two years in prison. The Omelyan Kovch Award is now given for a significant contribution to intercultural dialogue. Aron Weiss is one of the award winners. He was born in the Ukrainian town of Boryslav (now Lviv Oblast) and survived the Nazi occupation. His neighbors, Ukrainians and Poles, helped him. Aron Weiss is currently researching the Holocaust and international relations. You can read information about him, other rescued Jews, and their rescuers in the upper showcase. Among them, there are diplomats and ordinary residents of our city. There is a basement installation to the right of the showcase where Aron Weiss's family hid for 22 months.

Towels with Ukrainian and Polish ornaments are an integral part of the installation. They symbolize the protection, care, and warmth that saved this and other Jewish families. To the right of the basement installation, there is an interactive monitor with Aron Weiss’s interview. Behind you, there is a video projection with the Ukrainian Righteous Among the Nations. The video on the left shows the Rescuers, the one on the right shows those rescued by them. Just imagine how difficult it was to overcome the psychological barrier and wartime conditions, knowing the punishment for hiding Jews. Usually, the rescuer and their entire family were executed. Around the corner to the right of the monitor, you can see statistics on the number of Righteous Among the Nations by country and nationality. Please note that in this list of 51 countries, Ukraine occupies an honorable fourth place.
